A Restless Classroom After Lunch - Genre Reflection #1

A Restless Classroom After Lunch

A different odor fills the hallways every day
As I make my way to class
That room on the second floor
Filled with a cacophony, noisy and crass
It is the students entering after lunch
Who think that school is over
That it is time to throw Cheetos
And to act as ones not sober
The teacher walks in
And the students begin
To relent of their schoolroom sins
But not before some try her more
And act like school is such a bore
“But school is something that makes you great
Makes you intelligent so appreciate
The education you receive and don’t refuse it
Sit down and write no more excuses
School will help you to succeed
In life and I will not have you impede
Your futures because of restlessness from lunch
Start on you work you chatty bunch!”
The teacher added with a humorous touch
The students surrendered
To make themselves better
And began their classroom endeavors.

  1. Ms. Lanier,

What a great poem! I am also in a classroom after lunch, and I can completely relate to this experience! Your word flow is wonderful, it makes me feel like your classroom is coming alive! Not to mention your descriptions of the environment are spot on for students coming out of lunch. A favorite part of the poem for me is the teacher speaking to the students. It is a great reminder that students do not always understand the importance of their education. As teachers, it is our job to help them find value in their education. As you said "school will help you to succeed", isn't that the truth?!

Thank you for sharing your reflection,

    Ms. Hollas

  2. Dear Miranda,
Thank you for your Genre Reflection. I loved it. The sights, sounds and smells of an after lunch ruckus. Your poem had the feel of the oh so familiar Dr. Seuss (please don't be offended). And if only we could make our students ALL realize that school is something that WILL make them great! I can hardly wait to welcome my first rowdy bunch back to the class after lunch recess! I think a little Glade room freshener and a hefty dose of patience will help a lot! Thank you for sharing your poem.
    Sincerely,
    Amy Haight

  3. Miranda,

I'm glad to see the final product for your genre reflection! You have some clever rhymes at the end of your lines, and I think that this poem -- should you share it with any future students -- will be very accessible to them. The teacher in you really comes out in the poem. I know I will have fun with my first classes that are immediately after lunch!

  4. Miranda,

You did an excellent job on this poem. I think that a lot of teachers could relate. The descriptions you gave were very realistic and helped provide sensory and emotional connections.
